The thing that confuses me most about racist, homophobic and just discriminatory people is not that they look at someone and judge how they look/act/dress etc. It’s that they probably go home everyday and think about how freaky the disabled look, or how they can’t stand people with a different…

Not to defend racists and homophobes.. but most people who have those views were either taught by their parents to not like that kind of person, or in some cases have classical conditioning.  Say you were a young kid and you were robbed by a guy who happened to be black/Asian/Hispanic (or even white), you associate his skin color/physical distinguishing features with the crime because you are too young to know otherwise… and you carry that on into adulthood if not corrected.

It is not much different from a person who was bitten by a dog and now fears dogs..

Most people who love their dogs/other animals unconditionally do it because they’ve never been wronged by a dog, in my opinion I’d take a dog over a person any day.
